About the event
The Historic Mobile Preservation Society (HMPS) has an impressive collection of notable portraits at the Oakleigh house. The society's goal is to share the stories behind these portraits with visitors, but currently, only a few of them are featured on regular tours. By sharing the stories of these favorite pieces, we hope to give visitors an engaging and educational experience, and a deeper understanding and appreciation of the collection.
The portraits in the collection include images of politicians, actors, authors, and socialites, as well as grand portraits of prominent Mobile families. One of the most notable pieces is Thomas Sully's "Miss Walton of Florida," which is a remarkable addition to the collection. Another notable individual featured in the portraits is Alva Vanderbilt Belmont, who was born in Mobile and would marry into the wealthy Vanderbilt family and build stunning homes such as The Marble House in Rhode Island.
Sharing the stories behind these portraits will not only provide a more comprehensive understanding of the collection but also give visitors a glimpse into the lives and experiences of the individuals portrayed. It will also highlight the significance of the HMPS in preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of Mobile.
