About the Oakleigh Belles Program
The "Oakleigh Belles" are a group of young women who represent the Historic Mobile Preservation Society and the community as ambassadors of southern history, culture, and hospitality. The program, which began in 2008, instructs high school students in historic preservation providing them with the skills needed to confidently serve as docents at the Oakleigh Historic Complex and the Museum of Mobile. Oakleigh Belles are selected annually in a competitive interview setting.
Oakleigh Belles conduct tours through the Oakleigh Historic Complex and participate in special events, including Haunted Oakleigh, Christmas at Oakleigh, and Mobile's Historic Homes Tour. In addition, they represent the Museum of Mobile by guiding visitors through the exhibits and assisting with special events. Civic involvement includes volunteering with the Mobile International Festival, LoDa ArtWalk, the Senior Bowl and other functions. They also enjoy spending time together for fun activities including picnics and parties. Monthly meetings, with special guests, help develop the skills necessary to become successful community advocates as well as future historic preservationists. In the course of carrying out their duties, they will have the opportunity to absorb the history of their city from a unique perspective. Learning how the past can impact the present and the future is one of the perks of becoming an Oakleigh Belle, and will be a life-long asset.
What it Takes to Become an Oakleigh Belle
Oakleigh Belles come from all over the Mobile area; from both public and private schools. Each Oakleigh Belle is active in her school and is required to maintain a cumulative "B" grade average. Because the Oakleigh Belles interact so closely with the public, they must be outgoing, poised, and possess excellent communication skills. In addition, they must have a passion for history.
Oakleigh Belles must be at least a freshman in high school at the time of the interview, complete the Oakleigh Belle application form, provide 2 letters of recommendation (one should be from a high school guidance counselor), write a one page essay describing why they would like to become an Oakleigh Belle, provide a copy of their high school transcript, and attend an interview. Interviews last 20 minutes and are conducted each January and February. During the interview, candidates will be judged on poise, personality, and communication skills. A good general knowledge of Mobile and Alabama history as well as an age-appropriate knowledge of world history and events, literature, and the arts will be necessary for a successful interview.
